Overgrown park

Most of the island used to be a lush carefully maintained park, but it has been left on its own for pretty much a decade by now. Lots of out of control huge plants. Rhododendrons, ferns, roses, etc. Some trees that look truly ancient.

Things to be discovered

  • If the portal is open, a spider's nest with cocooned animals, later also maybe a child or two
  • (when the portal has been activated) Scurrying through the overgrown park, is an old four-legged Iwasaka Spider Probe Bot. It is conducting measurements and analysis on anything unusual that it finds, but it is obviously badly maintained and somewhat malfunctioning. It was sitting under a tarp until the kids who meddled in the old labs, re-activated it. It is unarmed and not hostile, unless physically attacked.

2. Old ice cellar

Unassuming door in what basically looks like a hill goes down into a half-underground cellar. Someone has obviously been living here.

Things to be discovered

  • Skeletons of cats, foxes, squirrels and various birds
  • Tiberius' meticulous journal describing the comings and goings of the kids and counselors, and actions the old man undertook to prevent them finding the hidden lab and portal.
  • Inflatable mattress
  • Top quality sleeping bag rated for sub zero temperatures
  • Drinking water in 10l jugs and smaller bottles.
  • Heavy duty flashlight
  • Tinned food, bisquits
  • Small gas powered cooking stove, pots and pans and utensils

3. Lawn

Slightly neglected lawn between the castle and the coach house, used for playing impromptu games, having picnics, etc.

Things to be discovered

  • (when the portal is open) Antennas, legs or wings that look like they're from insects, but that's impossible, they're far too big.

4. Stone fountain

Round, about 2 meters tall and 3m diameter. Sculpture of mythological figures, quite spectacular but obviously abandoned and now just a scummy pond

  • (only when the portal is open) At first they look like weird fish, but soon you realize that these are the larval stage of some insect, possibly dragonflies

5. Pond

Pitch black water, lilies, frogs. Small island in the middle. The pond is connected on both ends to a narrow circular stream that goes around the castle.

  • (only when the portal is open) At first they look like weird fish, but soon you realize that these are the larval stage of some insect, possibly dragonflies
  • A small rowing boat and oars. Holds 2 adults or 4 kids

6. Gatehouse

Originally sixteenth-century, the gatehouse forms the main entrance to the castle domain. It has been converted to a home for the house warden and his daughter.

Things to be discovered

  • A HAM radio. It is difficult to operate if you don't know what you're doing. As long as the portal is open, it is severely jammed. Kids with knowledge of radios and/or help from Gustaf can try to figure out that some powerful signal is blocking the radio, and can triangulate the source of the jamming if they manage to move the radio about the island and supply it with power.
  • General tools for working on the gatehouse and other buildings. Saws, hammers, screwdrivers, a drill, nails, screws, etc.

7. Vegetable garden

Next to the gatehouse. A lush garden with all sorts of vegetables, well tended by the house warden and his daughter. There is a small garden shed

Things to be discovered

  • (only when the portal is open) Something has been munching at the vegetables. Kids with some knowledge of gardening can deduce that carterpillars or insects have been eating the vegetables, but the size of the bite marks is far too big. To the untrained eye, the vegetables just seem half-eaten by rabbits or other rodents (there are no rabbits on the island).

8. Ruined Plague House

17th century building originally intended for isolating plague victims. Currently in ruins.

  • If the portal is open, a spider's nest with cocooned animals, later also maybe a child or two

9. Eastern bridge

Slightly rotten wooden bridge. White paint peeling off. Slippery when wet.

Things to be discovered

  • under the bridge on the shore: Handgun wrapped in old newspapers (about 2 years old) with a few rounds of ammo

10. Dock

A small wooden jetty where boats can dock. The island's main shuttle boat is usually docked here, but Gustaf has taken it out. When Gustaf has returned, ravenous centipedes will quickly destroy the boat.

Things to be discovered

  • When Gustaf has returned, the boat is here but it has been overrun by giant centipedes who have been gnawing at it, causing it to sink.

12. Farm ruin

The farm used to supply the castle with fresh produce, milk, eggs and meat, but it has been abandoned for over a century. You can still make out the fields, and the walls of the building are largely still standing.

Things to be discovered

  • If you dig around in the weeds, you can find some severely rusted old farm tools

13. Small beach

In one of the inlets on the southeastern side of the island, there is a small sandy beach. It is hard to reach due to some steep rocks.

Things to be discovered

  • A motor dinghy, somewhat hidden under a tarp.

14. Northern bridge

Things to be discovered

  • When the portal has not yet been opened (or at GM's discretion) an old four-legged Iwasaka Spider Probe Bot under a tarp under the bridge. It has been sitting here for some time, but can still be activated and will then go through its regular program of conducting measurements and analysis on anything unusual that it finds. Due to lack of maintenance it is malfunctioning somewhat though. When the portal has been opened, the robot is already roaming about, and the PCs will only find the tarp. They can try to track the robot.

15. Southern bridge
